About
So what is this site all about?
Konami's 1989
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade is my all-time favourite video game -- in fact, I even own the four-player cabinet along with its 1991 follow-up,
Turtles in Time. For years I'd been experimenting with the idea of creating a database for the game, complete with animated sprites and other media, but unfortunately the project kept getting placed on the backburner for a variety of reasons beyond my control.
My interest in this fledgling concept has recently been rekindled, however, and with a lot of time and effort the database may one day be complete. At the very least, we'll have a great collection of animated
Turtles sprites for everyone to enjoy.
What can we do with the sprites?
Animated sprites work as eye candy on the Internet -- good for avatars, signatures, flash movies and even PC games, if one were inclined to create one. A
Ninja Turtles fan game constructed with some content from the original '89 classic would be a great way to pay homage to the venerable
Turtles' legacy.
How can I help?
We here at "TMNT Sprites" welcome you to contribute to the site by sending in animated sprites, backgrounds, props, etc. If you're a sprite ripper and can rip every frame of an animation in reasonable quality then you can really help the project out. (Incidentally, sprites in simple sheet form are also welcome.) To submit sprites, please visit the contact page and e-mail your contribution. You'll recieve full credit for your contribution on the Sprites page.
What about other Turtles games?
Perhaps sometime in the future "TMNT Sprites" will expand into a collection of sprites from the vast panoply of
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, but for now my focus rests solely on my favourite entry in the franchise.
Is it legal?
Well, we are after all extracting copyrighted artwork. But as long as we don't claim the artwork as our own or try to sell it for profit, then it is not against the law.
Final Words?
My final words are aimed at the creators of this game and at Konami, publisher of nearly all the legendary
TMNT games. Thank you for creating such a classic and outstanding beat 'em up, one which really made going to the arcade a fantastic experience -- the last game I would play before leaving that same night to return home from my holiday.
I really don't think any other game made in my lifetime could ever mean as much to me as this game does. And I hope that my attempt to preserve its memory by sharing the game's great artwork with fellow fans will be the source of fond memories for many a
Turtles fan.
